RORY LEWIS
As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with incredible collaborations, creative breakthroughs, and unforgettable moments behind the camera. From Los Angeles to London and New York, I had the privilege of working with remarkable individuals who brought their unique stories to life through portraiture. Here are my top 10 favorite sessions of the year:
Capturing Hannah’s headshots was an inspiring experience. Her passion for acting, evident from her early theatrical roles to her recent feature film "Waking Karma," shines through in every frame. This session in Los Angeles allowed me to highlight her multifaceted talent and dedication to the craft.
2. ChronoVisions: Ray Proscia as a Revolutionary Leader
The "ChronoVisions" project continues to be a creative highlight of my career. Ray Proscia’s portrayal of a revolutionary leader brought a dynamic energy to this series. Set against a backdrop of societal upheaval, these portraits blend historical intrigue with cinematic storytelling.
3. Admiral Sir Tony Radakin: Tradition Meets Leadership
Photographing Admiral Radakin, the 5th Chief of the Defence Staff, was an honor. This portrait, capturing him with the baton of office, symbolizes his dual roles as a modern leader and a custodian of tradition. The historical significance of this session resonated deeply with me.
4. Marti Matulis: Cinematic Brilliance
Born on July 4th, Marti Matulis embodies the vibrant energy of his craft. Known for his roles in "The Mandalorian" and "Evil," Marti’s session in Los Angeles celebrated his cinematic achievements and the essence of his artistry.
5. The Royal Lancers: A Tribute to Heritage
Working with The Royal Lancers was a journey through history. Inspired by classical masters like Caravaggio and Sir Thomas Lawrence, I sought to honor their legacy with portraits steeped in tradition and reverence.
6. Steve Pemberton: A Personal Milestone
Photographing Steve Pemberton, a long-time inspiration of mine, was a career highlight. His ability to seamlessly embody diverse personas made this session in London both meaningful and creatively fulfilling.
This personal project, inspired by Renaissance portraiture, was a celebration of history and artistry. My partner, Alexandra, brought elegance and poise to this Los Angeles session, bridging the past and present with timeless grace.
Paul Kaye’s vibrant energy and versatility brought the "ChronoVisions" series to new heights. His theatrical flair and introspective moments added depth and intrigue to this project, making his portraits unforgettable.
Exploring the Napoleonic era through Adam Wesley’s portrait was a creative journey. The carefully curated elements—a globe, law book, and Roman fasces—combined with Adam’s thoughtful expression, encapsulated a pivotal moment in history.
My latest military portrait of General Sir Patrick Sanders embodies honor and dedication. As Chief of the General Staff, his legacy is one of resilience and strategic brilliance, which I aimed to convey in this London session.
This year has been a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring allure of storytelling through portraiture. As I look ahead to 2025, I remain dedicated to capturing the essence of humanity, whether in Los Angeles, New York, or London.
