On the first day of the year, 2023, twenty countries allowed transgender military personnel to serve openly. In 2014, the British Army granted transgender people permission to serve openly in its military forces.
Soldiery British Army Portraits Exhibition, a labor of dedication by professional portraitist Rory Lewis, has made its mark in the art world by historically documenting the modern British Military. The exhibition, in collaboration with the British Embassy in Washington DC, recently found its way to the prestigious Omni Shoreham Hotel. This special event paid homage to the legendary General Sharon Nesmith and highlighted the profound bond between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Rory Lewis is very pleased to announce his Portrait of Bill Speakman VC has been Shortlisted The British Photography Awards. The BPA run an open, responsible competition aimed at celebrating photographic talent from all British and British-based photographers.

Bill Speakman was born and brought up in Altrincham, Cheshire and educated at Wellington school. He was 24 years old and a private in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), British Army, attached to the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers during the Korean War when the following deed took place at United Hill, for which he was awarded the VC.
Lieutenant General Richard Wardlaw OBE was appointed as the first Chief of Defence Logistics and Support in October 2019, and is responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of a cross-cutting, pan-Defence strategy for Support, a c£14-billion/annum enterprise covering every facet of Engineering and Logistic Support. Commissioned by The Queens Gurkha Engineers, I captured General Wardlaw at the London Studio. The final Portrait to hang in the Regimental Mess.
From a recent portrait commission with Royal Navy Officer Lieutenant Commander Read who arranged a portrait sitting at the London Studio. Shortly retiring from active service, the Commander wanted a record of his Royal Navy career and a portrait which his family will cherish for generations to come.

Admiral Sir Ben Key, First Sea Lord, the highest ranking and most senior admiral to serve in the British Armed Forces. Commissioned to capture Sir Ben’s official portrait, we visited Naval Headquarters in Portsmouth, photographing the Admiral on Board his Flag ship HMS Victory.
