Capturing Leadership: My Latest Portrait of General Sir Patrick Sanders (Military Portrait Photographer Rory Lewis London 2024)
I’m thrilled to share my latest portrait commission from the British Army, featuring General Sir Patrick Sanders, KCB, CBE, DSO, ADC Gen, who has served as Chief of the General Staff since June 2022. This marks my third portrait for the esteemed gallery of British Army leaders, joining my previous works of General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith and General Sir Nicholas Carter.
General Sir Patrick Sanders was born at Tidworth Garrison military hospital and spent his formative years in diverse locations such as Norway, Gibraltar, and Iraq. This rich upbringing provided him with a unique global perspective that has shaped his remarkable military career. Commissioned in 1986 into The Royal Green Jackets, he has undertaken operational commands in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, showcasing his unwavering dedication and strategic acumen.

His extensive experience includes pivotal roles like the Pol/Mil adviser for Coalition Forces in Iraq during 2003-2004, Colonel Army Strategy, and Chief of Defence Staff's Liaison Officer to the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Sir Patrick’s leadership has spanned higher command appointments, including the 20 Armoured Brigade, the 3rd (UK) Division, and the Field Army. Promoted to General in 2019, he commanded UK Strategic Command until May 2022 before stepping into his current role.
