Rory Lewis Photographer will be exhibiting a new project comprised of vivid and thought-provoking portraits at the Wex Photo & Video Photographic Gallery in London. This show is being launched as Rory’s debut sale show enabling individuals to acquire limited edition prints of new quintessential iconic portraits. From Sir Patrick Stewart, to Tobias Menzies, Ian McKellen and many more.
Rory Lewis is a dedicated portraitist who has spent over a decade on a quest to capture many of the world’s most recognised faces. Sittings have included the likes of William Shatner, Sir John Major, Sir Derek Jacobi, Iain Glen, Rufus Sewell, Natalie Dormer to name a few. Several iconic portraits of Rory’s have been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in London. Rory’s portraits have been exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic.
The most recent project complete by Rory is entitled ‘Soldiery’. This immense project, taking two full years to finish, has been hailed a national success story. The scope of Soldiery was both broad and deep: documenting the British Army of the 21st century. The exhibition was named by the BBC as ‘The Changing Face of the British Army’.
Rory breaks the mould of typical risk-averse portraiture which is commissioned within the media industry. Dynamically challenging the established norm and instead injecting moments of spontaneity, and even awkwardness, in to his imagery he successfully shuns the aggrandising and sycophantic result typically seen in portraits of the famous. Rory’s aim is to strip back the artificial layers of staid portraiture and replace it with strangeness and a sense of quiet.
Excitedly, for the first time Rory will be exhibiting a new project comprised of vivid and thought-provoking portraits at the WEX Photographic Gallery in London. This show is being launched as Rory’s debut sale show enabling individuals to acquire limited edition prints of new quintessential iconic portraits.
Rory divides his time between London and Los Angeles working with a wide variety of clients. In addition to his projects and private portraits, his photography has been commissioned by Pepsi, Universal, The British Army, The Times, The Guardian and Cancer Research UK among others.
Rory draws immense inspiration not from previous photographers, but from the Masters of Art including Hans Holbein the Younger, Titian, Caravaggio and Jusepe de Ribera. The result is an exciting and fascinating new collection.
I’m thrilled to share my latest portrait commission from the British Army, featuring General Sir Patrick Sanders, KCB, CBE, DSO, ADC Gen, who has served as Chief of the General Staff since June 2022. This marks my third portrait for the esteemed gallery of British Army leaders, joining my previous works of General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith and General Sir Nicholas Carter.
Today, as we mourn the passing of the talented American actor, Mark Margolis, I find myself reflecting on the moments I had the privilege of spending with him during our portrait sessions. Mark's career spanned decades, and he starred in numerous films, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Most notably, his portrayal of Hector Salamanca in "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" earned him critical acclaim and an Emmy Award nomination in 2012.
Hugh Bonneville is best known for playing such archetypally English, buttoned-up characters as Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey, Ian Fletcher in W1A and Mr Brown in Paddington.
Tobias Menzies is a stage, television and film actor. He is best known for his role as Brutus in HBO's Rome, Edmure Tully in HBO's Game of Thrones, and the dual roles of Frank and Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall in STARZ's Outlander, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination.
Stephen accepted my invitation to sit for a portrait at the London Studio. I’ve admired his work for many years. Graham is not only a screen icon, but a fellow scouser.
It’s not unusual for photographers to be inspired by other types of art. As you may have noticed there is a great deal of Renaissance Italian influence in my portraiture.
